East African country on the coast of the Red Sea and considered to be part of the Arab world. In 1962, it was annexed by Haile Selassie as a northern province of Ethiopia. Following a civil war that lasted until 1991, Eritrea gained its independence and became a republic in 1993. During that time, many Eritreans fled the country as refugees.
